My mission was simple; help people share their budgets. My wife has no interest in my nerdy budgeting but she respects that it exists. I invited her to Share for YNAB, gave her access to the categories she cares about and kept budgeting as usual - the only difference is, she has now stopped asking "How much is in the Gifts fund?"!
Share for YNAB, formerly named "Family Budgets", was born as a submission for the YNAB API development contest where it picked up 2nd place.
Fast forward 1.5 years, the tool has now amassed over 2,000 users and during this process, I received lots of valuable feedback which prompted a re-work of the existing tool to do it's job better.
My name is Darren Taylor, I'm a Software Developer from Scotland, currently living in Berlin with my wife whilst working for a fintech start-up.
I've been using YNAB every day since Valentines Day of 2017 and through the software, it's accompanying rules, free tuition and some determination to use it consistently, it's changed my life.
When the API contest was announced, it was a no-brainer for me. I love YNAB, I love developing things, so let's smash them together and make something useful; thus, Family Budgets, or as it's now known, Share for YNAB, was born. I didn't expect to come 2nd and I certainly didn't expect so many people to use it.
I acknowledge this tool is only useful until the day YNAB actually integrates sharing functionality into the application, but, until then, I hope I can work together with the users to build something that solves a real problem.
Cheers for visiting the site and if you've made it this far, thanks for reading!
